Taking every opportunity: Recycling at Assurity.
As a Certified B Corporation, we’ve got to walk the talk when it comes to sustainable business practices. Our efforts can be seen just about everywhere at Assurity Center – in our hallways, cafeteria, and under each and every desk.
It all started 45 years ago, according to Claims Analyst Lisa Hoffman, when one associate took initiative to recycle aluminum cans and later, paper. In 2009, the Sustainability Task Force was formed to educate associates on green practices both for work and home. Recycling systems were even incorporated into our workspace design when Assurity Center was built; today, we recycle 100% of our paper and electronics.
In 2018, we diverted 53% of our waste from landfills, earning us silver designation and Role Model Business status from the city of Lincoln’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Assistance Program (WRRAP).
Our efforts to eliminate as much waste as possible aren’t limited to recycling paper at our desks and using disposable utensils in our cafeteria. During Assurity Center’s construction, three existing stormwater structures were sealed and repurposed to provide for a massive cistern. This allows us to capture, store and reuse stormwater for irrigation while reducing heat island effects and the impact to downstream receiving waters.
Like all B Corps, we’re committed to using our business as a force for good – and that means everything from a 1-gallon wastebasket to a 180,000-gallon water tank.
